Analytics operations
1. Analytics operations
In the previous series of exercises, you used the Average line from Tableau’s Analytics tab to quickly find and mark an average on a chart. But what else is in this tab? And how can we use it more effectively? Let’s start with a sample of paid social data, which you’ll get more familiar with in the next series of exercises. We previously calculated engagement rate, so let’s start by looking at a trend of engagement rate, engaged visits, and visits over time. Now, if we drag an average line to the chart, we’re presented with a series of options. We’re asked which of the charts (engaged visits, visits, and engagement rate), we want the average line for, as well as whether we want it across the table, pane, or cell. In this case, there’s no difference between those three options, since they all have the same x-axis, or, in other words, no dimension splitting up their x-axis. If we add an average line to each chart, we’ll see something like this, where the average is calculated for each metric. But what happens if we add another dimension, say, platform, to the visual? We can see that the average is calculated across both Facebook and Instagram; in other words, the average isn’t calculated by platform. This is because we selected the ‘table’ option when we dropped the average line into the visual. What if we want to have the average calculated for each platform? Well, we can edit the reference line. And instead of clicking “entire table” we can select “per pane”. Now we can see the average is clearly calculated by platform as well. What else can we do in the analytics tab? We can add a trend line, where we’re presented with options including a linear fit, exponential fit, and polynomial fit. More on how to use trend lines in our statistical courses. Important to note here, is that we can customize trend lines by chart - for example, we can use a linear fit for the number of visits, and a polynomial fit for the trend of engagement rate. Ok! Now that you’ve seen how to use the Analytics tab in tableau, its time to practice yourself!2. Let's practice!
