Sharpening your data focus

1. Sharpening your data focus

Welcome back! So far we've merely looked at visualizations. Now, let's become data refinement experts with slicers and filters.

2. Types of slicers

Slicers act as interactive filters which you can visually manipulate. Here, we see timeline slicers for focusing on specific timeframes, for example, a date slicer allowing selection of specific date ranges.

3. Types of slicers

Then we have hierarchical slicers for navigating through layered data like product categories and subcategories.

4. Types of slicers

and finally we have list slicers for simple selection, for example, a region slicer with a dropdown menu listing different regions.

5. Types of filters

Next up we have filters. Filters work behind the scenes, refining your data view based on chosen criteria. They refine the data displayed in visuals by setting criteria at different levels. First is visual level filter: it is applied directly to a specific visualization, affecting only the data displayed in that chart or graph.

6. Types of filters

Then we have page level filter. They are used at page level to control all the visuals displayed on the page of a report.

7. Types of filters

Finally we have report level filter. It is applied to the entire report, impacting all visualizations that use the filtered data.

8. Unveiling customer trends

Imagine you're working for a retail company and want to understand how different customer groups interact with your brand. Think of customer segments like loyalty programs. You might categorize customers as Gold, Silver, or Bronze. This data helps you understand buying habits across different customer groups. Now, let's leverage the power of filters and slicers, by using a slicer for "Customer Segment", like Loyal Customers or New Customers, you can focus on a specific group. Additionally, applying a report-level filter for "Date Range" allows you to see sales growth specifically for that chosen segment within that timeframe. This combined approach allows you to tailor your analysis and identify trends within customer specific groups.

Let's practice our concepts over an exercise.
