Unleashing your data story

1. Unleashing your data story

In this video we'll unlock the power of semantic models by creating impactful reports and extracting valuable insights. We'll start by connecting to an existing semantic model. Click on 3 ellipses and select Create report. Now that we're connected, Power BI automatically takes us to the report view. This is your canvas where the data story unfolds. On the right side, you have the "Visualizations" pane. Let's explore some options! First, let's see how sessions perform across different traffic sources. Drag and drop a bar chart onto the canvas. From the "Fields" pane on the right, select "Traffic Source" for the X-axis and "Sessions" for the Y-axis. Now, we visualize the number of sessions segregated by traffic sources. Great, now we have a visual telling us the total number of sessions by different traffic sources. The x-axis here is the traffic source and is the categorical data. Every report tells a story, so let's add another chapter! Drag and drop a line graph and populate it with "Date" on the X-axis and "Profit" on the Y-axis. Now, we can see a profit trend over time. The Profit on the Y-axis here shows the numerical data. Remember we can always customize titles, labels, and colors to enhance clarity. So, if we click on the Format pane here and turn on the data labels, you’ll notice the labels make it easier to understand the line chart better. When you hover over any data point of line, you'll notice some additional details, these are called tooltips. Once you're happy with your report layout, it's time to share your insights! Click on "File" and then "Save as." Give your report a clear and descriptive name, and it will be saved within your Power BI Service workspace. Want to share your data story with colleagues? Click on "Share" and enter their email addresses. This option will only share the report to the end user and not the entire workspace with View permissions. They'll receive access to your report and can explore the insights you've revealed. Now, let’s work on a few exercises to test our knowledge.
