1. Creating a cohesive story
Welcome to chapter three. We will now focus on data storytelling. Data storytelling is the ability to effectively communicate insights from a dataset using narratives and visualizations.
2. Data storytelling
There are four aspects of great data storytelling.
The first is accurate and complete data. This helps establish trust with your stakeholders. The second is a good design that provides clarity and is consistent. The third is context. Context involves explaining goals and customizing the message based on the audience. The final aspect is the narrative. The dashboard should explain the next steps or the call to action.
Let us look at the multiple hats you need to wear to tell a great data story.
3. From a developer to a consultant
You have done an excellent job so far. Now it is time to put on a consultant's hat. This involves communicating the insights you gleaned to Munchy's management. They are business users and immediately understand terms such as sales, profit, and expenses. So it will be best to leave out technical jargon such as cross-join, data source, or a parameter.
Your story should attempt to answer questions such as:
How will this grow my sales or profit?
How will this strategy improve customer satisfaction?
How can I save on shipping costs?
In the next slide, let us discuss how we can deliver on it.
4. Three dashboards
Your data story will consist of three dashboards. You will reuse many of the charts built in the prior chapters.
In the executive summary dashboard, you will provide key KPIs such as sales and profit. This dashboard will provide a high-level pulse of the business.
The growth opportunities dashboard will provide specific recommendations on how Munchy's can grow sales using cross-sell promotions. The shipping costs dashboard will suggest multiple strategies to reduce shipping costs.
5. Final view
Here is a look at one of the story points in the final view. Combined with action and a quick filter, your dashboard should uncover actionable insights.
6. Let's build your data story!
Let us now start building your data story.
