What is Copilot Studio?

1. What is Copilot Studio?

Welcome to Building Agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio. Think about the questions your team answers again and again, one message at a time. Over the next four chapters, you'll build assistants that take that work off your plate.

2. Meet your instructor

This course was developed with Nia Joseph, an AI Product Manager at Microsoft who works on AI-assisted products. She believes the best way to understand a tool is to build something real with it, and that's what you'll do here.

3. What you'll learn

Chapter one gets you oriented and builds your first agent. In chapter two, it starts taking action, with flows. Chapter three grounds your agents in your own documents and data, and chapter four covers what comes after you build: publishing it, monitoring how it's used, and handing it off.

4. So what is Copilot Studio?

Copilot Studio is Microsoft's low-code workspace for building AI agents. An agent is an assistant you design once and reuse: give it a purpose and it handles those conversations for everyone. It sits alongside Microsoft 365, so it can draw on an Outlook mailbox, a SharePoint site, or an Excel workbook without any code.

5. An agent, not a one-off answer

Ask Copilot a one-off question and you get a single answer, then it's gone. An agent sticks around. If a dozen people each ask how to submit an expense report, you build the agent once, and it answers them all the same way. That's why agents make the most sense for questions that keep coming up.

6. Build in Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Studio?

In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, you can describe an agent and add files as knowledge. That's ideal when it's for yourself or a small team. To take action or reach a whole department, build it in Copilot Studio.

7. Getting around Studio

Studio's narrow left rail has three main entries: Home, where you land; Agents, where your assistants live and where you'll spend most of this course; and Workflows, for the multi-step automations of chapter two. Inside an agent, the other areas run across the top, from Overview and Knowledge to Topics, and on a narrow window some hide behind an overflow button. When you first open Studio, dismiss any welcome tour or consent popup.

8. Two kinds of agent

Copilot Studio offers two kinds of agent, but clicking New agent doesn't show you both, so check which one you're creating before you build. Click the arrow to its right instead, and a menu opens with two groups. The top Agent, tagged GitHub Copilot with a coin icon, uses credits, so skip it. Under "other ways to build," choose the Agent tagged Standard. That's what this course is built on, and it costs nothing to practice with.

9. Let's practice!

Let's start by getting a feel for where things live, and which everyday tasks are worth handing to an agent.
