KPI charts

1. KPI charts

Now let's turn our attention to a few other types of charts that Sigma can create. In this video, we'll learn about KPI charts.

2. KPI (Key Performance Indicator) charts

KPI charts leave the X and Y axes behind. They display a single metric value and can be formatted to

3. KPI (Key Performance Indicator) charts

include trend lines showing metric history, and even

4. KPI (Key Performance Indicator) charts

a numeric comparison of the current value to a historical value. They're great to use when a fully detailed chart would be too much information or too cluttering, or when one key business result - like total profit or daily orders - should be prominently highlighted on a dashboard.

5. KPIs are chart elements in Sigma

The truth is that KPI charts don't always look like traditional charts - often appearing as just a number. Under the hood though, they're aggregating and summarizing data from another Sigma table, which gives them similar behavior to bar and line charts that do the same thing. Let's learn how they're made.

6. DEMO

KPI charts can be created from scratch from the Add an Element button, or you can even create a KPI chart directly from a table summary value.

7. DEMO

For now, let's create a KPI chart from scratch as a child element of this table, so we can learn about its different configuration options.

8. DEMO

KPI charts do not leverage X or Y axis sections. Instead, they have menus for VALUE, TIMELINE and COMPARISON.

9. DEMO

Let's pretend that we need a KPI showing a count of calls received at the Oakmark Bank call center. We'll drag the column [Call Id] onto the VALUE menu, set the aggregate to Count, and rename it "Calls Received". This causes the KPI to display a total count of calls.

10. DEMO

We're currently seeing a count of all calls present in the parent table, which goes back several years. If we want to limit this KPI to show only the call count for the current year, we can filter the "Calls Received" column under the VALUE menu directly. Updating the filter to show the current year, year to date, shows us how many calls have been received this year.

11. DEMO

It's important to label KPIs with the time period they represent, so we'll update this KPI's title to "Calls Received - Year to Date".

12. DEMO

In its current form, this KPI is already a powerful way to display a key metric that Oakmark Bank needs to monitor. Coming up, we'll learn how to add historical comparisons to the KPI.

13. Let's practice!

But first, it's your turn to complete a few exercises and practice building simple KPI charts like this one.
