Area charts and legend controls

1. Area charts and legend controls

In this video, we'll help Oakmark Bank's Risk Management team.

2. Tracking call volumes and fraud rates

They're responsible for many metrics at the call center, including total call volumes and how frequently certain merchants are referenced in fraudulent activity calls.

3. Tracking call volumes and fraud rates

They're interested in tracking metrics over time, and want breakouts by team for some of the metrics - but there's a key component they need that a line chart - and even a multi-line chart - doesn't quite provide.

4. Tracking call volumes and fraud rates

They need to see a breakout of calls handled by team over time, but also the proportion of total calls each team handles every month, ideally in one visual. This would help them answer questions like, "Is call activity usually spread evenly across teams?", "Is one merchant consistently the source of most fraud reports?".

5. Area charts show proportions clearly

Area charts are helpful for tasks like this. They're similar to line charts, but the space between each line represents a proportion of the whole amount.

6. Coordinating colors across charts

With so many things to monitor, the Risk Management leader is also struggling to keep up with busy dashboards and multiple color schemes. In one chart, the Fraud Detection team is represented in green, in another they're red. This is confusing and makes it difficult to see patterns across visualizations.

7. Legend Control centralizes colors

Sigma's solution to this problem is the Legend Control. Legend Controls can centrally manage color schemes across charts, for a consistent appearance.

8. Sigma control elements

As a reminder, a control is a workbook element that influences another workbook element. Date filters, checkboxes and list boxes are a few of the other types of controls in Sigma. For a refresher on the basics of Sigma controls, see our Intro to Sigma course.

9. Let's practice!

Now, let's see how we can bring together the benefits of area charts and legend controls to help the busy Risk Management team. First, test your understanding of line and area charts.
