The shared responsibility model

1. The shared responsibility model

One area of responsibility where cloud computing models differ is security. When an organization manages its data in its own data centers, it is responsible for all aspects of security. However, as infrastructure moves to the cloud, some responsibilities shift to the cloud provider. This concept is called the shared responsibility model. Security in the cloud is a shared responsibility between the cloud provider and the customer. Although specific responsibilities vary depending on the cloud computing service model, organizations are always responsible for securing their data, and the cloud provider is always responsible for securing the infrastructure. At Google Cloud, customer data is defended against threats and fraudulent activity using the same infrastructure and security services used for Google’s own operations. However, security of the cloud and security in the cloud are two different things. The cloud provider is responsible for the security of the cloud, while the customer is responsible for security in the cloud. It’s important for organizations to understand how their specific responsibilities vary depending on the cloud computing model they use. This is especially critical because, according to a Gartner report, 99% of cloud security failures through 2025 are expected to result from user error. Organizations must clearly understand their roles and responsibilities in cloud security to ensure proper protection.
