Choosing a cloud computing model
1. Choosing a cloud computing model
So, how does an organization decide which cloud computing model is the best option? The answer depends on business needs, required functionality, and available expertise. If they are looking for a highly flexible, scalable service while maintaining control of their infrastructure, then IaaS is the right choice. This model offers the most control and customization but also requires the most management responsibility and technical expertise. If they need a platform designed for building software products, then PaaS would help their business immediately. It provides a cost-effective way to build applications while requiring less infrastructure management, though it still demands some technical expertise. If they want ready-to-use features without the hassle of installations, then SaaS might be the best option. This model involves the least management responsibility and technical expertise but also offers the least control and customization. These computing models are not mutually exclusive. Depending on the use case, most organizations use combinations of all three to address different business needs. They compare options based on factors such as level of management, control, responsibility, flexibility, and required expertise. For example, imagine a large organization needs to implement a new inventory management system. If it has in-house expertise and is willing to manage infrastructure, it could build the system using IaaS resources. The IT team would have complete control over server configurations but would also bear the burden of managing and maintaining them. Alternatively, the organization could choose a PaaS solution to build a custom application while offloading infrastructure management to the cloud provider, retaining control over application features while reducing the management load. Finally, it could purchase a ready-made SaaS solution, eliminating daily infrastructure management but also giving up control over software features and functionality. Each option is viable, so organizations must weigh the benefits and tradeoffs for their specific use case. These cloud computing service models provide choices, flexibility, and options that on-premises hosting simply cannot offer.2. Let's practice!
