Customizing for mobile users

1. Customizing for mobile users

One thing that's really cool with Tableau is the possibility to optimize visualizations for specific devices, like phone or tablet. For example, we can see that we're on the "Default" view here, and that a Phone layout is automatically generated. If we decide to preview the device, now we have device types available in this drop-down (Desktop, Tablet, Phone). We have some specific models of Desktop we can optimize for, and the same holds true for tablets (we can optimize for a Nexus 9 for example) and phones (iPhone, Galaxy and so on). We can add a specific preview preset by right-clicking on "Default" and selecting "Add Tablet Layout", for example. Let's optimize for an iPad of 10.2 inches. Let's go to the "Phone" layout now. There are different things that we can optimize there. For example, we can fit the width, and specify what we would like the height to be. We could set it to 900 for example, but it renders poorly at the bottom, so let's go back 1500. Alternatively, we could edit the height for a specific graph, by selecting it, clicking on the down arrow and "Edit Height...". We can see some objects here that can be added to the visualization, some of which you already know. So we could add a Text Object for example to provide some more context on the visualizations. Finally, we can choose which visualizations should actually appear there. If we want to get rid of this horizontal barplot at the bottom, we can select it, which will show the corresponding item here in a slightly darker shade of gray. We can right-click on it and select "Remove Zone from Phone".
