So, Simla, now that I have a better idea of what AI governance is, what does it look like in practice? What are the key parts of an AI governance system? Great question. There are several key components, but I’ll highlight the main ones: ( This should be a slide) Governance structure – Governance structure usually means a cross-functional team or committee that oversees AI efforts. It includes legal, compliance, IT, risk, and business roles. Policies and principles –Policies and principles set the organization's ethical guardrails for using AI. They define the fundamental principles and values that guide decision-making, such as ensuring fairness in AI outputs to prevent discrimination, promoting transparency so that how AI works isn't a black box. AI risk assessments – AI Risk Assessments help teams evaluate the risks of a specific AI use case before it’s launched. Monitoring and auditing tools—Monitoring and auditing tools test models for bias, explainability, and accuracy. Training and enablement—We need training and enablement to ensure that everyone involved in AI, not just the data scientists, understands the responsibilities and risks. So, governance isn’t just about one team making rules—it’s embedded across the organization? Exactly! It's everyone's responsibility, but that can sound daunting. How do you ensure consistency, accountability, and real-time visibility when AI is being developed and used by many teams? This is where dedicated governance tools and platforms become essential for making it all work in practice. Right, I was just going to ask how do governance tools help with this? Governance tools support compliance, oversight, and operational control in a few ways. For example: (another slide) Compliance: Tools can help document model decisions, log data sources, and show that ethical principles are followed—this is especially important for regulations like the EU AI Act. Oversight: They allow risk teams and executives to review model behavior, flag issues, and even halt deployment if needed. Operational control: Good tools let you track models throughout their lifecycle—from design and testing to deployment and retirement. That really highlights how these tools offer continuous control throughout the process. That brings me to another question—where does governance actually fit in the AI lifecycle? Is it just a final check before deployment? It’s much broader than that. Governance should be embedded throughout the AI lifecycle. Let’s break it down: (Another slide) Planning and design: Governance begins in the planning and design phase, with the definition of use case criteria, potential impacts, and acceptable risk levels. Development: As models are built, governance ensures that data is collected ethically, features are justifiable, and models are tested for fairness and bias. Deployment: Before going live, governance involves final validations, documentation, and sign-offs. Monitoring and maintenance: Post-deployment, governance ensures models perform as expected and don’t drift or create unintended consequences. So it’s not a checkpoint—it’s a continuous loop. Exactly. Continuous governance helps organizations stay compliant, ethical, and effective, especially as AI systems evolve. This has been incredibly helpful, Simla. I used to think AI governance was all about red tape, but now I see it’s actually what helps organizations build trust and avoid disaster. That’s the spirit!
