Configuring a ServiceEntry

1. Configuring a ServiceEntry

Next, let's explore ServiceEntry. A ServiceEntry adds an entry to the service registry that's maintained by the mesh. After the entry has been added, the Envoy proxies can send traffic to the service as if it was a service in your mesh. ServiceEntry enables you to manage traffic for services running outside of the mesh. You can redirect and forward traffic for external destinations, like APIs consumed from the web, or traffic to services in legacy infrastructure. Define retry, timeout, and fault injection policies for external destinations. Add VMs to your mesh and run services in them, and configure a multi-cluster Istio mesh by logically adding services from different clusters. By default, Cloud Service Mesh configures Envoy proxies to pass through requests to unknown services, meaning Service Mesh features cannot be used to control traffic to these unregistered destinations in the mesh.
