Responsible AI
1. Responsible AI
Let’s take a couple of minutes to talk about one of the most important components of a successful AI strategy - a “Responsible AI” framework.2. Responsible AI
AI has the potential to bring great, positive impact to our lives.3. Responsible AI
However, like many new technologies, it can also cause substantial harm. Therefore, it would be irresponsible not to place equal, or more, focus on establishing4. Responsible AI
governance over the AI solution and similar developments. Even global organizations, such as UNESCO, have created initiatives to be thought leaders in this space. For more, look at their Recommendations on the Ethics of AI.5. Define Responsible AI
To define Responsible AI, it is an approach to developing, assessing, and deploying AI systems in a safe, trustworthy, and ethical way. Each company may create their own set of values and principles, but they should generally be founded in ethics, legality, and social impact.6. Elements of Responsible AI
There are several important elements to a Responsible AI framework. Those are accountability - who is responsible if something goes wrong.7. Elements of Responsible AI
Inclusivity - ensuring diverse perspectives are sought after, including those outside the company.8. Elements of Responsible AI
Fairness - not perpetuating harmful stigmas and biases.9. Elements of Responsible AI
Transparency - providing explainability behind the system and the responses.10. Elements of Responsible AI
Security - ensuring data, the algorithms, the system, and the users are not compromised.11. Elements of Responsible AI
Finally, reliability - ensuring consistent results and interactions. Some companies create more principles and some create less. The important thing is to ensure that each principle is well defined and clear as to how it should be evaluated.12. Responsible AI throughout implementation
Each principle should be instilled at every stage of the development process for an AI solution.13. Responsible AI throughout implementation
This includes data collection, design, development, and use.14. Ethics board
If there becomes more investment in AI, a business may need to establish a Responsible AI ethics board. An AI ethics board is a group of individuals dedicated to strengthening the Responsible AI principles and their governance at scale. In some cases, they will also collaborate with other businesses to create a shared Responsible AI model.15. Risk and Impact Assessment
It is never too early to utilize risk and impact assessments. This is a tool, based on a series of questions and prompts, which help determine the potential impact of AI on people (inside and outside of a business), other companies, and society. It will typically align with the elements already discussed, such as accountability, fairness, and security. Along with basic questions on the purpose, the end-users, and the intended use, there are others to help identify possible risk. These include, who will use or be exposed to the system, what types of decisions will the system make, who will the decisions be about, what type of research, evidence, or other technology is being used in this system? There are plenty of great resources out there with framing and structure to guide you through this process.16. Let's practice!
In a time where AI is exciting yet not fully understood by many, it’s important to be thoughtful in how an AI solution is built and used. Businesses who adopt this responsible outlook will gain the trust of their end-users and customers.Create Your Free Account
