Tooltip . . . and Action!

1. Tooltip . . . and Action!

This demo is all about interactivity. We will first set up a handy Viz in Tooltip, and in the second part of this demo, we will work with Actions. Let’s start by building a simple tree map visualization of the number of Titles per Production country. We will also increase the size of the label. It’s clear that the USA leads the film industry. By hovering over, we can see that they’ve produced 2080 films present in our database. That small pop-up box we see when hovering over the chart is a tooltip. It’s one of the options on Tableau Marks card, and we can adapt it. At the moment, we have the default setup. Let’s rearrange it to a sentence. We will put the variable elements in bold and hit Preview. Perfect! Tooltip, however, can do so much more. It can, for example, store another chart with extra insights. Let’s try it out. We will open a new sheet, let’s call it “Top profitable titles”, where we will visualize the Gross Profit per Title, but we will only keep the top ten titles by filtering on top ten by Gross profit. Now, getting back to our Viz in tooltip sheet, we will open the tooltip once more and insert that new chart into it, using the Insert option. A Small peek at the preview. Looks good but let’s still add the title. Preview. Much better! But hovering over some countries, we hardly see any titles at all! This is because this chart only considers the top ten titles across all countries and not within our hover-over-country selection. We still need to take one extra step. In the Top profitable titles sheet, we see that the tooltip is now present in the Filters. Right-clicking on it, we need to select “Add to Context”. Doing that, we force a tooltip filter to be carried out first. Back in our Viz in Tooltip sheet, we now have extra insights hidden in our tree map! Now that we know the Viz in Tooltip, let’s explore another great technique, Actions. Before we do that, we need another chart in a new sheet called Voting. We will visualize individual Production countries and their average IMDb Votes as a measure of overall film popularity. We will sort it from high to low, apply color based on the measure and add labels. We will now set up a small dashboard. We create a dashboard by clicking here. Often it looks very small when you open it, so it’s a good idea to resize it to automatic size. On the left, we can find the sheets present in the workbook. Let’s drop both sheets to the dashboard and expand the tree map to the Entire View. Now, let’s explore the world of Tableau’s actions! Opening the Dashboards tab in the ribbon, we can access the Actions menu. By Adding action, we see that there are various possibilities. Highlight seems interesting! We will set up this action so that by hovering over the source sheet (the tree map in Viz in tooltip sheet), we highlight what's on the Voting sheet (our target sheet). Let’s test it out. It works! We can now compare the information in two charts effortlessly, and we see the full picture with a viz in tooltip pop-up. So much information already in such a neat dashboard! For example, we learn that there are 172 French titles in our database, Osmosis being the most profitable one, but looking at overall film popularity, France is scoring somewhere in the middle. Viz in tooltip and dashboard actions open up a world of possibilities, which we can now further explore together in the exercises.
