Putting it all together

1. Putting it all together

Congratulations! You now have experienced utilizing data visualizations and KPIs to convey insights.

2. Linear sequence revisited

If you recall, we developed a timeline of our analysis through the narrative arc. We'll adhere to this structure very closely as we build our presentation.

3. Exposition and data statements

It's time to put our story hats on! You'll begin by introducing yourself, usually introducing your title and role on the team. You'll then state the business problem. In this case, we'd like to assist policy makers and a university accreditation agency to identify potential opportunities for university improvement using CPS data.

4. Explanatory analysis and exposition

Your presentation should include much of the exploratory process that we've explored together. This includes identifying preliminary measures of success, seek out insightful views of the data, determine relevant KPIs such as year over year debt. Then, commit to a dramatic insight that correlates with the project goal. Be sure to determine where visualizations are more useful for driving your narrative. For example, if University of Intelligence's average YoY debt didn't increase as expected compared to its peers, perhaps they implemented something to mitigate debt like better grant programs.

5. Dazzle with visualizations

Visualizations should speak to your key performance indicators in an accessible and engaging fashion. Be sure to choose formatting selections that enhance your story. For example, using different colors to reflect each university on a time series line chart. Your dramatic element should also be expressed visually.

6. Final words

Your points should be clear, with little room for ambiguity. If you have more than one point, they should be clearly listed in a fashion that follows your story. Takeaways such as calls to action should be highlighted at this time. You should lay out next steps. Sometimes it isn't always clear what these will be. Sometimes next steps are audience curated following a Q&A. Next steps may be further analysis or request for more data. Address disclaimers such as data limitations & liberties taken with calculations. Make recommendations if you're prepared to do so.

7. Let's practice!

In our final exercises, we will stitch our story together.
