Getting to know the case study
1. Introduction to the case study
Hi, welcome to this case study! I'm Maarten, and I'll be your instructor.2. Why a case study?
Why should you do a case study? A case study allows you to apply your skills. You won't learn any new concepts, but you'll practice them to solve a real-world business problem. We suggest the following prerequisite before taking on this case study.3. Setting: improving remote working policy
The setting of this case study is as follows. Polaris Tech, a fictitious tech company, wants to improve their remote working policy, taking into account the needs of their employees. They have conducted a survey among their employees, asking a series of questions about current remote working habits and needs. Polaris Tech has engaged you as a consultant to help them analyze the survey. You'll be assisted by a data scientist, who is responsible for all analyses, visualizations, and technical tasks, and an HR expert, who acts as a subject matter expert. Your tasks are to find out how remote working is currently experienced by the employees, and to provide recommendations on possible problems and challenges.4. The data: remote working survey
Roughly, we can distinguish four groups of questions in the survey: Questions related to the employees themselves, like birth year questions related to remote working habits, like remote working frequency, questions related to remote working barriers, like lack of skills and questions related to remote working advantages like productivity. We'll use this data to solve the business problem, which we'll define further on the next slide.5. Defining analytical questions
Before starting the analysis, we need to break down the business problem into specific questions to guide the analysis. Typically, business problems are initially only vaguely defined. By breaking the problem down into manageable chunks, it will be easier for us to build up a clear picture for management and provide specific, actionable recommendations. Defining analytical questions is best done with the help of subject matter expertise. In our case, the HR expert has prepared the following analytical question and related subquestions: Can we distinguish remote working profiles? Do they differ in remote working habits, or in remote working needs?6. Let's practice!
