Business continuity scenario

1. Business continuity scenario

Imagine you’re attempting to access your organization’s cloud data storage. Suddenly, a message appears telling you that sensitive customer data has been encrypted and you need to pay a large sum of money to unlock it. You realize the data storage has been infected with ransomware. This ransomware attack could cause a major disruption for your organization if you don’t handle it properly. Fortunately, you have a business continuity plan. Let’s explore how business continuity planning can help the company solve this problem. After you alert colleagues to the ransomware attack, your team can begin carrying out the business continuity plan. Your plan identifies the most important data and services to your organization’s operation. Your business plan also lists acceptable amounts of downtime for each of those resources. Because the ransomware attack affected sensitive customer data, your plan only allows for one hour of downtime. Your risk assessment identified that a ransomware attack could affect your data storage, so you have a disaster recovery plan in place. The disaster recovery plan portion of your BCP contains information about each team member’s role. According to your plan, your colleague is responsible for communicating with other departments to make sure everyone knows what’s going on. Another colleague is responsible for shutting down cloud resources affected by the ransomware. Meanwhile, you are responsible for getting the data back online. Your disaster recovery plan also includes recovery solutions for restoring apps and data. Because the data affected by the ransomware has a short acceptable downtime, your team has worked with your cloud service provider to back it up to another site. Your plan contains cloud service provider contact information, or CSP contact information. You’re able to reach out to your CSP and access the backed-up data, which hasn’t been affected by the ransomware. Since your team has been regularly updating your BCP and training for all types of disruptions -including a ransomware attack- everything goes smoothly and the data is only unavailable for a few minutes. Disruptions happen, and they can require significant effort from you and your team. But, with a proper business continuity plan in place, you and your team can minimize disruptions efficiently, effectively, and with confidence!
