Introduction to the three states of data

1. Introduction to the three states of data

Companies collect large amounts of highly confidential data, like customer data, financial data, and business data. As a cloud security professional, you’ll work to ensure data is secure. In this video, you’ll learn about the three states of data. Let’s get started! The first state of data is data at rest. This is data that is not being accessed or actively moving from device to device or network to network. Data at rest is stored on servers, databases, mobile devices, physical drives, or in the cloud. At rest data includes intellectual property, employee and customer personal information, financial documents, contracts, and other types of data, like healthcare data. The next state of data is data in transit. The next state of data is data in transit. This is data that is moving between two places, like between a cloud provider and your site, or between two services. For example, using a mobile device to access a banking app moves data between two places: your mobile device and the host of the banking app. The third state of data is data in use. Data in use is data that’s being accessed by one or more users. Data in use includes, but is not limited to data that is being processed, erased, read, or accessed. For example, after you have accessed the banking app, accessing your transaction history on a banking website or app is an example of data in use. If you then decide to transfer money between accounts, the data then returns to an in transit state, while it moves between your device and the banking app’s host. The data returns to being in use as you review additional account details. Now that you know about the three states of data protection, you’ll be better prepared for your career as a cloud security professional.
