Sharing content in a secure way
1. Sharing content in a secure way
In this video, we'll learn how to share content securely in Microsoft Fabric. Proper sharing is crucial for collaboration while maintaining data security.2. Principle of least privilege
Brief reminder: always apply the principle of least privilege when sharing an item. Grant only the minimum access necessary for users to perform their tasks.3. How to share an item in Fabric
Users that are in a workspace can see, by default, everything inside it. However, you can also share one specific item with anyone else by manually generating a sharing link. This is useful if you want to share something with a colleague without giving access to the entire workspace. To share a Fabric item, click the "Share" button next to the item name. Then, select the appropriate permission level and add the recipient names or email addresses. Finally, click "Send" or copy the link.4. Sharing a semantic model
When sharing a Power BI Model, if you click "People in your organization with the link can view and share," you can configure the permission options for the link you are generating. Recipients with "Build" permissions can edit the report and create new content. They will find the source available when connecting to a model via Power BI Desktop or Analyze in Excel. The "Reshare" option is enabled by default and lets the recipient forward the link to other people who will have the same permissions (view and/or build).5. Sharing a warehouse
Data Warehouses in Fabric have unique sharing considerations: You can grant advanced permissions to query the data via SQL or Spark. Enable these options if users require full access to run queries on the Data Warehouse, which is typical for comprehensive data analysis tasks.6. Reviewing access permissions for a Fabric item
To see which users can access a specific Fabric Item, click on the three dots icon next to the item name. This will open the Options menu, and near the bottom, you will find "Manage Permissions." Here, you can monitor and update which users are currently accessing the report.7. Impact analysis in Fabric
A final, crucial feature in Fabric is the ability to visualize dependencies between items. This helps you understand the full impact of sharing or updating a model. To use Impact Analysis, select the "Impact Analysis" option in the top menu. You'll see a visual map of all connected items, which helps prevent unintended consequences when sharing data. For instance, imagine if you blindly share a report with build access without realizing that the underlying model (which could be in another workspace) contains sensitive information. The recipient could query all underlying data, leading to a potential security risk.8. Let's practice!
Now, it's time to apply what we've learned. In the upcoming exercises, you'll practice sharing items with appropriate permissions.Create Your Free Account
