Getting started in Sigma

1. Getting started in Sigma

Welcome to Introduction to Sigma! I'm Katrina, and together with my co-author Mandy, we're excited to guide you through your Sigma journey.

2. Oakmark Bank needs your help

In this course, we'll step into the role of an analyst at Oakmark Bank, looking into their call center analytics.

3. Oakmark Bank needs your help

Oakmark chose Sigma because it needed a data platform that was both easy to use and powerful. Their call center generates hundreds of interactions a day, and everyone from the representatives to staffing managers to the executive team wants to slice the data a dozen different ways without having to wait. However, they also want to go beyond traditional analytics and create decision workflows, such as an interactive workflow for logging agent comments or reviewing and approving escalated calls.

4. Oakmark Bank needs your help

With Sigma, teams can explore, analyze, and visualize millions or even billions of rows of data with a spreadsheet-like interface through a live connection to their cloud warehouse, so the information is easy to understand and always up to date. Plus, teams can create Data Applications to update and manage data to track workflows and decision-making processes.

5. What is Sigma?

Sigma is a cloud-based platform. Upon login, you'll be directed to a homepage with menus like workspaces, my documents, and shared with me to access existing assets, or we can create new assets for ourselves or to share with our organization.

6. Sigma's User Interface

We'll spend most of our time in a workbook, which houses all the work for a particular analysis. All workbooks look a little different, but they're all made up of individual components called elements, such as text, tables, pivot tables, charts, and control elements. We'll take a closer look at the Sigma user interface in a later section, but note that in these lessons, you'll use a sandbox version of Sigma unique to this DataCamp course. It's possible that the appearance of the course version of Sigma differs slightly from your organization's version of Sigma. But don't worry - the overall experience will be very similar.

7. What you'll learn

To start, we'll cover the fundamentals of Sigma and how to build meaningful analytics that set the foundation for more interactive, scalable solutions. In the context of Oakmark Bank's call center, that means creating a flexible workbook that supports the needs of many different users, from high-level trends for executives to agent-level detail for staffing managers.

8. What you'll learn

We'll walk through: - Connecting to and using live data - Using various workbook elements, which are the building blocks of analysis and visualizations - Adding filters and controls so different teams can create custom bookmarks or saved views without needing separate dashboards - And publishing and sharing your analysis with different teams These core skills will help you build flexible, self-serve reports in Sigma and give you a strong starting point for building Data Apps in the future.

9. Let's practice!

Now that we've introduced what Sigma is and how it can be used, let's see it in action. In the next section, we'll demonstrate how to navigate the Sigma homepage, create a workbook, and connect to data sources. First, test your knowledge of Sigma's capabilities with a short quiz.
