Adopting GPT models

1. Adopting GPT models

Great job. We now understand how GPT tools can help augment almost anybody's workflow and have seen some examples.

2. Up next:

We'll take this one step further to learn more about their benefits and limitations and what to consider when deciding whether to use a GPT tool. Then, we'll dive deeper into using GPT tools safely by exploring the inputs and outputs.

3. Benefits

We've already discussed the benefits of augmenting and supercharging existing workflows. Publicly available tools like ChatGPT process and share data and charge usage fees. GPT tools developed within businesses provide greater control over privacy, security, compliance, and costs. Some businesses create several tools tailored to different employee groups; the finance team may have a different tool from the marketing team. Similarly, we may find personal devices that have different AI tools integrated into image editing software versus text editing software.

4. Limitations

Many businesses have prevented the use of GPT tools at work. This is because, in most cases, anything we put into publicly-accessible tools in the form of a prompt becomes part of the data the model learns from. Businesses have since developed their own tools with additional safeguards in place, which are often on closed or private networks. A closed network means that access is restricted to authorized users and devices only and the data does not go back into the model. This shift means businesses are responsible for ensuring the data is managed legally, securely, and ethically.

5. When to use a GPT tool

So, how do we know when it's appropriate and safe to use a GPT tool? We can start by asking ourselves the following questions. Do we require accuracy in the results?

6. When to use a GPT tool

If the answer is yes, we should consider other methods to ensure accuracy, especially regarding business-critical decisions.

7. When to use a GPT tool

Is the result verifiable through other sources?

8. When to use a GPT tool

If yes, we can use the GPT tool to get us there faster and then check the results with peers or other verified sources.

9. When to use a GPT tool

Does the task require analyzing sensitive, private, or confidential information?

10. When to use a GPT tool

If the answer is yes, we should pause to ensure we understand the specific restrictions the business has in place for the tool and that we do not leave ourselves vulnerable to malicious users. We may need to consider another method.

11. When to use a GPT tool

Finally, is ownership of the result needed?

12. When to use a GPT tool

Some tools do not claim ownership of the output nor guarantee that the output is copyright-protected. If the answer is yes, we should seek legal counsel to ensure we have claimed the ownership rights and are not infringing on someone else's rights since these tools can provide similar outputs for multiple users.

13. Let's practice!

We'll be learning more about responsible use next. For now, let's practice.
