Bridging the advisory gap for Ghanaian start-ups

Ghanaian start-ups, a critical engine for economic diversification and job creation, face significant challenges in accessing timely, relevant, and affordable business advice. This often leads to high failure rates within their crucial early stages.

Ghana's vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem is characterized by a growing number of innovative start-ups across various sectors. However, despite a supportive policy environment and increasing digital penetration, many aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs struggle to navigate the complexities of business establishment, market entry, regulatory compliance, financial management, and growth strategies.

This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of a two-way SMS communication platform leveraging natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs), in providing personalized and scalable guidance to early-stage and aspiring entrepreneurs in Ghana. The scope will focus on the platform’s ability to: deliver stage-specific business development information (e.g., market research, registration, funding, finance); triage and respond to specific entrepreneurial queries; and facilitate timely and appropriate referrals to specialized human mentors, incubators, or financial institutions. The research will exclude the direct provision of funding or in-depth, long-term human mentorship.

The research is deemed highly feasible given the widespread use of mobile phones in Ghana, the increasing sophistication and accessibility of AI technologies (NLP, LLMs), and the existing precedent set by similar projects such as AccraCare, a healthcare advisory service for young people in the capital, and Agri Instant, a chatbot used by agricultural workers in rural regions. The research can leverage pilot programs of digital advisory services to gather empirical data on user engagement, knowledge acquisition, and early business outcomes.

Addressing this advisory gap is crucial so that entrepreneurs and start-ups across the country are able to get access to high-quality business advice at the point that they need it.
