Data storytelling maturity

Not all data stories are created equal. We learned that there are 3 levels of data storytelling maturity: Informative, Interesting, and Insightful.

Informative is the least mature level of storytelling. It involves the statement of raw facts using simple numbers that you may find in a database (Ex: Product A sold X units). No additional context is given.

The next tier in storytelling maturity is Interesting, which uses simple raw numbers with context. The raw numbers become more "interesting" with the additional context.

Insightful is the ultimate goal of a data story. It entails developing a finding that goes beyond the raw numbers by including context and relevant patterns or trends. Let's practice making the distinction between the three.

David is a data analyst for a soda company. He's analyzed years of soda sales data and plans to present his findings. In preparation for his presentation, he writes a script.
