Quiz 6 - Question 2
A start-up in Ghana is developing an AI-powered language translation tool to improve access to government services for speakers of less widely used local languages. The system can translate both spoken and written text into English and from English into several Ghanaian languages. While the team sees great potential to reduce language barriers, they recognize that translation quality will vary, especially for languages with limited training data. They also know that small errors could have big consequences, for example, in healthcare instructions or legal documents. Rather than assuming the tool will work the same in all contexts, they engage with community leaders, translators, and service providers to explore possible scenarios: cases where the tool could significantly improve access, and cases where misunderstandings could lead to harm. This helps them design strategies for when to use human translators and how to communicate the tool’s limitations.
