Loading Data from Snowflake Marketplace

1. Loading Data from Snowflake Marketplace

In Snowsight, go to Data Products and open Marketplace. Snowflake Marketplace is a catalog containing free and paid datasets from external data providers. You can search for data on the economy, weather, and so much more. Scrolling down, we see featured data providers, applications, and connectors. Applications can enhance the analytical capabilities of your own data, and connectors can help you load source data from another database into Snowflake. MySQL and Postgres are commonly used databases that store source data for a company. For this course, we'll just focus on finding a dataset to explore from a data provider. Some of the most popular datasets at the time of this video include data related to COVID-19, the US Census Data, and global weather data. We can tell these datasets are free by looking at the tag beneath the descriptions. Let's go back up to the top and pick a category. I'll go ahead and choose Marketing. Under the Pricing drop-down menu, choose "Free" to filter for free datasets. I'll choose "US Zip Code Metadata". We can see an overview explaining what the data provides, examples of business needs, a data dictionary containing columns, datatypes, and description, usage examples listing some business problems we can solve with the provided sql queries. We see what other datasets exist from this provider and related datasets. We also see the provider's email address and how often the data is refreshed. Let's click on "Get" to subscribe and rename the database name as US_ZIP_CODE. We'll choose the "PUBLIC" role so that every user in our Snowflake account can access this data. Now we can query the data! A new worksheet is created, including examples that were described. We can run a query to see the output. We can expand on the "ZIP_DEMOGRAPHICS" schema and click on the table to see all the columns and their datatypes, including the number of rows. I really like the example queries provided, so I'll save this worksheet into a new project folder called ZipCode Analysis. And this concludes the demo on Snowflake Marketplace.
