Sharing isn't always caring

1. Sharing isn't always caring

Chatting with ChatGPT might feel like chatting with a friend — easy, fun, and engaging — but it's important to keep some boundaries in mind. Let's take a quick look at what you shouldn't do when interacting with ChatGPT and why it matters. ChatGPT is an LLM trained on tons of publicly available text data. That makes it great at sounding human, but it's still just a machine recognizing patterns, not a trusted confidant. Think carefully before sharing personally identifiable information (PII) or sensitive details. Remember, your conversations might be stored or reviewed. It's also important not to discuss sensitive, confidential, or high-leverage information, such as business strategies, proprietary data, or other information you'd typically protect carefully. Why be cautious? ChatGPT understands language patterns, not the importance or sensitivity of the information itself. It doesn't "know" when something is confidential or private; it just generates text based on learned patterns. Sharing sensitive info could unintentionally expose you or your organization to unacceptable risks. Most importantly, if you are using ChatGPT within a business or organization, always defer to your organization's specific guidance or policies regarding using ChatGPT or other AI tools. I don't want to be a buzzkill, but ChatGPT can misbehave in other ways too. It sometimes "hallucinates" or confabulates information meaning it confidently provides facts or details that sound convincing but aren't actually accurate. New prompters often make the mistake of relying entirely on ChatGPT for critical tasks like medical advice, legal guidance, or detailed historical facts without verifying information independently. Always double-check any important information ChatGPT provides against reliable sources. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility, and utilizing ChatGPT is no exception.
