Introduction to the case study

1. Introduction to the case study

Hi, and welcome to this case study! I'm Maarten, and I'll be your guide.

2. Why do a case study?

A case study allows you to apply the skills you've learned in earlier Azure courses. You won't learn any new concepts, but you will practice Azure concepts with specific tasks, by working with a real-world business problem. You'll practice concepts and skills from the following courses.

3. Setting: support a book recommendation app in Azure

In this case study, you are part of a team of Azure consultants assisting AppSculpt, a web application company. The company is rapidly growing and is expanding to new markets and products, in addition to improving its current products. As part of that growth, they would like to migrate to Azure and take advantage of its scalability and flexibility. You'll be assisting them specifically with ReadRadar, a book recommendation app that suggests new books to read, based on someone's preferences and reading history.

4. How the book recommendation app works

Let's take a look at how ReadRadar is able to provide book recommendations to its users. In a first step, the necessary data for the recommendation model is collected and stored. These data include for example book metadata, user read history, book reviews, and ratings. The data are cleaned and prepared for the next step.

5. How the book recommendation app works

After processing, the data is sent to the recommendation model. This is a machine learning model that uses the available data as input to predict what books a user would be interested in.

6. How the book recommendation app works

The predictions of the recommendation model are sent to the ReadRadar app, which will present them to the users in a personalized overview with book excerpts and a link to the book store.

7. How the book recommendation app works

Throughout this process, we'll also make sure the app performs optimally and both the app and the data are secure. Let's look at a little sneak peek of the kind of tasks you'll practice in this case study and how they relate to the different parts of the book recommendation app.

8. How the book recommendation app works - in Azure

To help with ingesting and storing the necessary data in Azure, you'll create a storage account.

9. How the book recommendation app works - in Azure

You'll also create a virtual machine to support the recommendation model.

10. How the book recommendation app works - in Azure

In addition, you'll set up policies with Policy, and make sure role-based access control, or RBAC, is correctly set up as part of the security and data protection for the app.

11. How the book recommendation app works - in Azure

Finally, you'll set up monitoring to optimize performance using Monitor.

12. Assistance from the other teams

You'll be assisted by other specialized teams. They will give you advice throughout the case study where needed. These teams are the data architects, the data engineers, the data scientists, and the business analysts.

13. Assistance from the other teams

The data architects will assist you with the design of the Azure solution. They know which resources and services are important to include, and how they should be organized to ensure everything runs smoothly.

14. Assistance from the other teams

The data engineers are responsible for optimizing and automating the data collection process, and preparing the data for use in the recommendation model.

15. Assistance from the other teams

The data scientists are responsible for the development and maintenance of the machine learning model that will provide the book recommendations.

16. Assistance from the other teams

Finally, the business analysts will act as an intermediary to the business. They will help you ensure the business requirements are fulfilled.

17. Let's practice!

Let's kick off with your first exercise!
