Configuring a Lookup in Sigma
1. Configuring a Lookup in Sigma
Now let’s see how we can lookup customer data for each CD account holder at Oakmark Bank. To enter the Add Lookup modal, you’ll add a new column to your table. It works best to use an existing column’s drop-down and choose ‘Add new column via lookup’. First, we'll point the modal to the second table on which the lookup will be based and from which we will borrow columns. Then we’ll add the column names that we want to add to the CDs table from the Customers table. We could choose to aggregate the added columns, but we’ll leave this alone for now. Next, we’ll indicate the key columns the lookup should be based upon. In this case, our CDs table has a column [Customer ID] and the Customers table has a column just called [ID]. Only one pair of keys was necessary for this lookup, but you could add more key pairs with the ‘Add another mapping’ button. We’ll see summary bars showing how many keys from our original table have found one or more matches in the second table. 100% of our CD account holders were matched to a record in the customers table, which is logical because it indicates that we don’t have any CD customers missing from our customers table. Note that a less than 100% match between both tables does not always indicate a problem. If for example this lookup was reversed and we began our lookup from the customers table and then looked up against the CDs table, we wouldn't expect that every customer at Oakmark Bank had an active CD and therefore not all of the customer IDs in the customer table would be found in the CD table. Sigma developers should carefully consider the results of the KEYS WITH MATCHES bar to understand the degree of matching occurring between lookup tables. Clicking Done, we see the results. Columns with lookup values will be highlighted in blue to let you know that they aren’t original to the table. Clicking the blue text shows the names of columns from the table where the record was sourced. Clicking Megan’s name we can see her income from the Customers table, even though we didn’t bring that column over as part of the lookup. We just completed a simple lookup with Sigma’s Add Lookup modal. Now, try a few exercises to practice setting up basic lookups for Oakmark Bank.2. Let's practice!
