Qualitative, sequential, diverging
SurveyInsights Lab has built a color scale explorer for visualizing Likert-scale data. The dataset shows results from a survey about math anxiety, where each question has responses ranging from "Strongly Disagree" to "Neutral" to "Strongly Agree".
There are three types of color scale, each designed for different data:
| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Qualitative | Distinguish unordered categories |
| Sequential | Show ordering |
| Diverging | Show above or below a midpoint |
Use the color scale selector to explore how each type affects the visualization, then choose the most appropriate scale for this data.
