Statistics: true of false
So far, you've seen multiple ways of describing a variable or a distribution. Before you dive into some Tableau exercises, let's make sure you understand the following concepts.
Statistic | Description |
---|---|
Count | number of observations |
Median | midpoint of your observations |
Average | mean value of your observations |
Min/Max | lowest and highest value |
Quartile/IQR | 25th and 75th percentile / spread of the 50% of your middlemost observations |
Modality/Mode | number of modes / most occurring value |
Skewness | (a)symmetry of the distribution |
Kurtosis | distribution of extreme values |
Variance | squared deviation from the mean |
Standard Deviation | square root of the variance, same unit as variable |
Population | collection of all items of interest |
Sample | part of the population, the actual available data |
